Lions roar back to defeat U11 Youth
Town began brightly but were unable to make much progress offensively in the early exchanges as Basingstoke pushed them back in a concerted series of attacks, with George Lewis having to make two smart saves to prevent Basingstoke taking the lead.
However, Town shocked their hosts with a swift counter attack in the 6th minute that earned a corner. The resulting delivery fell to Will Bernardino and he was able to prod home from two yards out to give Town the lead.
Within two minutes they had doubled their lead after another lightning break breached the home defence. Bernardino this time was the provider and his driven cross eluded the Lions back line and Alex Paduano collected the ball at the far post, beat a defender and fired home.
Lewis and Sky Hull were kept busy by the Lions attack and Basingstoke pulled a goal back in the 15th minute when a long free kick came back off the keeper and was prodded home, with the away defence looking for an offside flag that never came.
With time running out in the first half Lions scored the equaliser as they profited from indecision in the visitors defence.
The next goal was going to be pivotal and it was Basingstoke who scored it after 10 minutes of the second half. After Town were unable to clear their lines from a corner and Lions tucked the ball home.
With Basingstoke playing a high defensive line, Will Bernardino then had two chances to equalise, the first saw him rattle a shot against the upright following a powerful run and second saw him denied by a last ditch tackle.
Try as they might Town were unable to fashion the equaliser and Basingstoke put the game out of reach with two minutes remaining. A Basingstoke attack down the left flank ended with their striker firing an unstoppable drive into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Town should be proud of their efforts and the game was a fine advert for Youth football.
